Earth Team members were in charge of operations on Earth Day April 2009. We began the day mulching and picking up garbage around the park. ET students and many local residents came out to Horner Park to show their appreciation and respect for the local environment. Tom McManamon, Horner Park's manager was out getting dirty with us as we geared up the young ones with gloves and Earth Day t-shirts. They day continued with a welcomed visit from our newly elected alderman, Richard Mell, who even got a chance to talk to a few students about their experience in Earth Team. Activities for the children commenced at 11am and ran until 2pm. Children were invited to get their faces painted, listen to stories about the enviornment, plant a seed, make a seed shaker or seed bracelet, or engage one of our members in a excercise challenge in tug-o-war or hulla-hooping. Two bikes, donated by Working Bikes, were raffled off to two Earth Team members at the end of the day.
Thanks to everyone for their hard work and participation we could not have put on such an event without the support of the Chicago Park District, Friends of the Parks, Afterschool Matters, our local volunteer Sue Davenport, or the efforts of the 28 Earth Team members.
